Exploring Alternatives to Fireworks

As the July 4th holiday and 250th anniversary of the signing of Declaration of Independence approaches, there are national and local opportunities to celebrate. However, the growing recognition of the impacts that fireworks can have on people, pets, wildlife, and the environment has prompted many communities around the country to reconsider how they celebrate.  Fireworks are explosive displays that create bright colorful lights, as well as heat and noise. They are the result of chemical reactions, and you can learn more about how fireworks work here.

Earlier in 2026, CIG reached out to the town to share some of the recent research on concerns about fireworks - and to encourage the town to explore and consider alternatives that are safer for the environment and more welcoming for all town residents.

Fireworks can cause significant harm, including injuries to individuals and pets. Each year, emergency rooms treat burns and other trauma caused by improper handling or malfunctioning fireworks. In addition, loud explosions can cause anxiety or severe distress for veterans, and animals. For many young children, the loud, unpredictable explosions produced by fireworks can be frightening and may be especially distressing for children with sensory sensitivities, anxiety disorders, autism, or previous traumatic experiences.

Fireworks are also a fire hazard, particularly in dry conditions, and contribute to environmental concerns by releasing smoke and debris into the air, which can impact air quality and leave behind litter in our public spaces and sensitive natural areas like nearby wetlands and waterways. These cumulative harms can affect the safety, health, and long-term sustainability of our community.

Some towns and other municipalities are making a change - and switching away from fireworks during holidays like July 4th. These include 15 cities across the US. As fireworks regulations change, some communities are switching to drone shows as one alternative. Drone light shows involve many coordinated drones with LED lights.

Alternatives to traditional fireworks displays, such as drone shows, could be an option in future years that support sustainability - and well-being for people and pets. What do YOU think about fireworks and potential alternatives?
